Bacteria must be kept out of the tooth by delicately placing adhesive agents that create the hermetic seal. A dental dam is important here, to avoid the contamination of saliva and help in the bonding process.

If all these steps are taken, the decomposition is completely eliminated and a good seal is achieved, the fillings are very comfortable and durable. You can expect from eight to ten years of service of compound fillers, but we often get much longer results, and we believe that it is due to the great attention we pay in the process.

For teeth that are more widely degraded, metal-free restoration has advantages and disadvantages. Porcelain materials and, more recently, zirconia are the current popular materials. These are the aluminum and zirconium oxides. These materials are not technically metal free, but in their oxidized forms these metals are more inert and less reactive. They are less expensive and look absolutely natural and natural. They are very biocompatible with the tissue of the gums.

The newest generation of all porcelain material is now strong enough to be very useful in areas of low tension in the front teeth. But in the molars, the force becomes a problem. To compensate for their lack of fracture resistance, they must be made thicker to use in the molars, which means that more tooth structure must be removed. The final restoration should be of the same height, so the additional thickness should be at the expense of the tooth, which requires a deeper cut in the tooth that puts the nerve at risk, especially with short and small teeth. The deeper cut in the tooth also removes more of the outer layer of tooth enamel, which makes the joint less reliable. Because these materials depend on the joint to hold them in place and seal the tooth, this is a serious problem for long-term success. Disconnection and fracture are the most common problems with these materials, which leads to early failure and increases the risk of root canal therapy.

We will work with you to help you make the right decision for your mouth. Because we routinely work with all of these materials, we can guide you through the appropriate alternatives and come up with a plan that is right for you.
