Inhalation Anesthetic

This is very useful to alleviate mild to moderate anxiety and reduce pain during the procedure, and the best part is the patient is awake through the dental procedure. This is administered through a mask that is placed over the nose and has a very mild effect. This is an easy method and does not involve injections. This is the safest sedative and is well tolerated by most patients.

Preparing for an appointment using inhalation anesthetic:

  1. The patient should avoid food and drink for at least 2 hours prior to the appointment to avoid nausea and vomiting during the procedure.
  2. If the patient develops a stuffy nose or any condition leading to difficulty in respiration, this must be reported to the doctor immediately and the sedation deferred, if needed.
  3. The intake and timing of regular medications for that day should be discussed with the dental provider on the previous appointment.

Biggest side effects of using inhalation anesthetic:

Inhalation Anesthetic is the safest sedative and also is short acting. It is well tolerated by most children and adults. Hallucinations may be one of the side effects of inhalation anesthetic but the drug wears out quickly from the body hence has no major or long-lasting side effects.
