PERIODONTAL DISEASE TREATMENT

Periodontal disease (also called gum disease) is more common than you think. If you have been diagnosed, you can rest easy knowing that your Luxe Dental practice team has extensive experience with periodontal disease and has successfully treated many patients.

Did you know? More than 75% of Americans suffer from gum disease; most do not even know it.

In this section, you can get more information about periodontal disease symptoms and its treatment.

Periodontal Disease treatments depend on the type of gum disease and its severity. If the disease is detected early (when it is gingivitis) and the support structures under the teeth have not been damaged, you may simply need professional cleaning. Our Lauderhill Dental Team can give you tips to improve your daily oral hygiene.

Periodontal Disease Treatment Options

Even with these measures, some patients develop more severe periodontal disease stages. The first step in the treatment of gum disease usually involves a special deep cleaning called “scraping and brushing the root.” In this treatment, our dental specialists in Lauderhill fl removes the plaque and tartar to the bottom of each periodontal pocket. This treatment can be done in several visits to our Dental Office, according to your needs.

The tooth’s root surfaces are smoothed (or “brushed”) to allow the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the teeth. This treatment can also take more than one visit.

Our Dentist at Luxe Dental may recommend medications to help control the infection and pain or to help cure. These may include a pill, a mouthwash or a medication that the dentist places directly in the periodontal pocket after scaling and brushing the root.

If you smoke or chew tobacco, it is important to quit. Ask your dentist or doctor for information on how to stop.

Another dental visit will be scheduled within a few weeks or months after your last tartar and root elimination treatment. On this visit, our dentist or hygienist will examine your gums to see how they have healed. He or she will measure the periodontal pockets again. If the pockets have become deeper and the supporting bone is lost, more treatment may be needed.

Periodontal Disease Cure

If the pockets do not heal enough after scaling and brushing the root, periodontal surgery may be necessary. Surgery allows the dentist to remove tartar and plaque from hard to reach areas. Then the gums are sutured in place to hold the teeth tightly. The surgery can reduce the depth of the bag and facilitate the cleaning of the teeth.

If periodontal disease has damaged the bone, surgery to rebuild or reshape the bone may be necessary. Splints, bite guards, or other devices may be used to keep the loose teeth in place and to help the tissues heal. If too much gum or bone tissue has been lost, the dentist can make a gum, a bone graft or a Dental Implant.

Our Lauderhill dentists can place a layer of membrane in the surgical area to help the gums remain in place while the root of the tooth is reattached to the supporting ligament. This is called “guided tissue regeneration“. After the surgery, the dentist can apply a protective dressing on the teeth and gums and recommend or prescribe a special mouthwash. Our Dentists may also prescribe an antibiotic and an analgesic.

Care After Treatment

Once your periodontal disease treatment is completed, our Lauderhill dentist can recommend more frequent checkups and cleanings. Regular dental visits and deep cleanings are important to keep gum disease under control. In some cases, your appointments may alternate between our general dentist and periodontist.

Oral hygiene at home

Good oral hygiene at home is also very important to help prevent periodontal disease from getting worse or coming back. Daily cleaning at home helps keep plaque under control and reduces tartar buildup.

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Floss your teeth (or use another cleanser between your teeth) once a day.
  3. You do not have to lose your teeth because of periodontal disease. Brush, clean between your teeth, eat a healthy diet and visit our Luaderhill Dental Office regularly for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
